Language Week

30 July to 3 August 2018

This year’s Language Week was held from 30 July to 3 August, with activities organised across as many as nine languages – Chinese, Malay, Tamil, Hindi, French, Spanish, German, Korean and Vietnamese. The highlight was undoubtedly a multilingual skit Airport Adventure, a combined effort by students using five languages, showcased during assembly.

As is typical of Language Week, we opened with Learn-a-Phrase in the morning, and a third language workshop where Year 1 students got to experience a new language from another culture. Workshops included French Football, Korean Jegi, Malay Games & Songs, Latin America Places of Wonder, Indian Traditional Costume, and Vietnamese Language.

A game Language Trail was organised for students to solve problems using learnt knowledge of languages, for example, counting one to ten in Spanish, saying hello in less known languages, and learning a Korean jiggle. Creative Writing and Talent Show competitions were held too. We received a wide variety of entries from students, ranging from Lego Animation to Chinese poetry that displayed the students’ creative stride in an elegant fashion, as they imbued their personal touch to their literary works. Special thanks to the PSP for sponsoring the prizes.

The Language Week would not have been possible without the hard work of teachers and students involved, but the efforts paid off when we recognised the diversities we represented through our languages.
